While in the skill point tree and paused time does not increase however it does increase when selecting a weapon from supply drop. Point optimization is also very important as well. If you don't play efficiently then this will be VERY hard for you. This jacket requires you to complete speedrun in under an hour. The only outfit that is difficult to get is the McFly Jacket. If you go to gameplay settings it shows all outfits and how to unlock them. This is probably the hardest achievement to get out of all of them. Other than that it was pretty smooth sailing through the game.Īll of this information is geared towards the McFly Jacket and 1 hour speedrun as it is the hardest part of the outfits. The only part that was difficult was the TrafficKing boss fight at the Sisters. I went through it with very few deaths compared to my hard playthrough. I did not like shock launcher because it costs too much energy and frag thrower I would occasionally use vs angels but if you are good at moving around quickly to the cores you don't need that either.ĭon't stress this run too much though. Overload and supply drop can be very useful in boss fights. You can put the points into whatever you need for the time. The rest of the points went into energy shield but I did not use it that much. Especially on the hardest difficulty out there. It is always nice to have the extra health/energy if you need it. Resource optimizer I maxed because it helps if you make mistakes. Use of weapons is just a great utility tree and the extra energy is nice. I maxed out power attack for the strong aoe clear and slow on units that survive the hit. I maxed out dash for mobility (I prefer maxing out dash instead of using overloads infinite dash but that is better for moving through areas quicker). These enemies also do pretty significant damage to the bosses if they can get a hit off. This means you can ghost break the enemies and the boss will focus them instead. I ran ghost break heavily because like I said regular enemies will spawn during the boss fights now. This is the build I went with for most of my playthrough in Newgame+ This makes every A LOT easier than if you had to restart at level 1. The beauty of this mode is that you will still keep your level and abilities from your current playthrough.

When I switched to Things I went from maybe ~50 inbox items a week to about ~80, meaning there were about 30 thoughts I week I just failed to capture because OF was loading too slowly. I used to wait up to a minute for the OF app on my phone to load. I would also not underestimate the reduction in bloat. I found I was able to do away with most of those and streamline my setup a lot simply because Things forced me to simplify, and that's a good thing. If you have a lot of custom perspectives, applescripts etc it will be a difficult switch, but don't let that dissuade you. There are also minor interface differences, e.g., in OF you type 3d for due in 3 days, in Things it looks at first like you can only use the date picker but if you type 3d that will actually work too. You may be used to hitting certain keyboard shortcuts, tabbing and having actions appear in particular perspectives and so on and that will be completely different in Things. The biggest issue that you're likely to come up against is that the Things interface really does work differently. The Things UI forces you to greatly simplify how you use the app and as a result you spend more time executing and less time organising. I went from using OF for 10+ years (and training others how to use it for a better part of those years) to Things earlier this year and haven't looked back. Obviously you can’t get as granular as you can with OF’s custom perspectives, but it does save some steps once you get it set up. And I create the same menu on my Mac by using URLs and Keyboard Maestro. Instead of going into the Things app, finding my Personal area, and then filtering by the “errands” tag, I can just use my saved searches shortcut to quickly jump to what I want.Ĭreating the saved searches is easy by using the Things Show List option in Shortcuts or by using the URL Link Builder on Cultured Code’s website to create a search URL. A fantastic sounding amp, if I could just get that tone out of a full size gigable amp Id have my ideal amp. It is my favorite of the two, and may be my favorite amp of all. While tweed Champs and blackface Princetons are commanding prices of over a grand on Ebay, you can grab the little Musicmaster Bass for around $250, and those with the energy and desire to take on a search could very well turn one up in a pawn shop or used music shop for less. One of them I keep at my bands practice place. The neck has moderate relief and the truss rod is at its maximum. It should be noted here that, as is often the case, what is good for a guitar is also good for harp, and the Musicmaster Bass amp really shines with the sounds of a little tin sandwich being pumped into it through a decent microphone. The bass plays well with medium action, and is currently set up with light gauge bass strings. If cranked, the clean becomes a fabulous dirty crunch with plenty of room to be heard in a smaller combo situation. The amp can provide excellent clean tones at lower volumes. Many players prefer to swap out the CTS speaker for something more to their liking, but the stock piece still delivers decent sound and is desired by some. Nothing fancy here, but it delivers in the sound department. There is a simple slider on/off switch, one knob for volume, one for tone. Laid out simply, the amp produces twelve watts with either 6v6 or 6aq5 preamp tubes. The Musicmaster Bass amp is a great way to get good tone from an honest vintage Fender tube amp without needing to take out a bank loan. Gradually the news spread that the Musicmaster Bass, while doing little for bass amplification, could flat scorch with a guitar, a situation which was something of a mirror of Fender’s initial bass amp offering, the Bassman. Somewhere along the line, however, a guitarist was hard up for something to power his six string, and a guitar got plugged into one of these things. Created as a practice amplifier for bedroom work, the amp really doesn’t do much at all for bass, with many bassists feeling that above 4 on the volume knob there really just isn’t much to it. One particular piece of equipment that illustrates this point well is Fender’s Musicmaster Bass amplifier. As is often the case, those low-dollar pieces of past years that got passed over so readily have become items of value to players these days. What that means is that jailer falls into his version of jail and the player can continue to scavenge on the ship unhindered. Instead, here you have other options, such as locking enemies into rooms by authorizing doors to lock, and by doing so you can hinder the enemy and potentially capture them. This isn’t like most first-person shooters where clearing the enemies and aggressively pushing against their line gets you the win. The point though is combat is a gameplay system, not a requirement or an end goal. I’ve done that a few times, and it works. So what’s the purpose of combat? The answer is simple, it’s the ability to give players agency and if they wish, they can clear a ship out. You have enemies who don’t reward you for combat, require a premium currency in the form of ammunition, and never get easier. That feels odd in some ways, you’ll earn new tools to deal with enemies but don’t gain dominance over challenging enemies. While they will get better weapons, and, eventually, rocket launchers, Screws never become a trivial confrontation. The player doesn’t become super powerful. The thing is, this isn’t that different in the end game. They’re just hulking enemies and if you’re stuck dealing with them, you’re probably going to have a bad time especially in the early game. They aren’t impossible but they’re going to use up a huge amount of your ammo, resources, life, and time all of those are important. The thing is, Screws are very hard to kill. With the name Screws, I always think jailors or security guards and that’s not a bad description. These are the big hulking guards who you won’t want to tangle with. In the early game, you will deal with enemies called “Screws”. So your ammo becomes a critical resource. If you run out of ammo for your weapons and items, you’ll have no combat abilities. Ammo is very sparingly given, and players are only allowed to bring a weapon from each grouping onto a ship. First, there’s no melee attack in the game and in the early game this feels like a major oversight, however, it’s a key to what’s going on here. So players will eventually start to ask themselves “Why should I attack enemies”, and this is a valid question.īefore we talk about the reasons for combat, there are more issues with an aggressive playstyle. While fighting enemies is interesting, enemies don’t drop items for the most part. The combat itself feels good, and this is a great first-person shooter. I’m sure some people might ask “How?” Combat in Void Bastards is … to put it in a single word, unrewarding. It teaches players how to not play aggressively. While many games push stealth or non-combat as the main goal, Void Bastards does something more important. The fact is, Void Bastards allows aggressive players but it doesn’t seem to want you to play itself in that manner. This is not how I normally play games, I like exploration but only safe exploration. If I needed a specific item, I could guess where these were. If I wanted to get fuel for my ship, I might rush to the engine room. I no longer cleared every ship, and by the end of the game, I often would choose to focus on specific objectives rather than risk combat. Void Bastards supports this idea, but after playing for a couple of hours, I noticed I wasn’t playing aggressively. The lack of danger is what I normally strive for before I think about my next move. I love rushing into a room or location, killing all the targets, and then spending my time exploring the location, if there’s the option for it or moving on to the next part of a game if there’s not. As a gamer, I’m a bit aggressive in my gameplay. With that out of the way let’s start with what I think is the biggest piece of Void Bastards’ appealing game design. At the same time, much of what I’ll be discussing about Void Bastards is not dependant on the rogue-lite genre and most would apply to rogue-likes or any genre. However, I just want to be clear if it sounds like I’m saying LITE and not LIKE, I am. That’s not the topic I want to bring up here, it could make for its video, which could allow me to finally talk about Nethack. These games don’t have a true permadeath system, pieces of the characters copy over and so on. These are Rogue-Lites, not a Rogue-Likes. The second issue is a war I’ve been conscripted in. Now it’s completely different in genre and style, but they are both roguelites and have some interesting similarities that should help illustrate how both games stand out. Two things before we begin, I’m going to also talk about a second game to compare to Void Bastards. But let’s talk about the game mechanics and design that make this game work.
